Code of Conduct and Child Protection

As a member of The Independent Society of Musicians, I adhere to its Code of Conduct and its Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.

Equal Opportunities Policy

Introduction

As a piano teacher, I am committed to providing equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, belief, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, marital status, or socioeconomic background.

This policy outlines my commitment to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Equal Opportunities Statement

I believe that everyone has the right to equal treatment and opportunities. I do not discriminate against anyone on any of the grounds listed above, and will take all reasonable steps to ensure that policies, practices, and procedures are free from discrimination.

Prohibited Conduct

  • Direct discrimination: Treating someone less favourably because of a protected characteristic.
  • Indirect discrimination: Applying a rule or condition that puts people with a protected characteristic at a disadvantage.
  • Harassment: Engaging in behaviour that creates a hostile, intimidating, or offensive environment.
  • Victimisation: Treating someone less favourably because they have made a complaint or helped someone else make a complaint about discrimination.

Complaints Procedure

If you believe that you have been discriminated against, harassed, or victimised, please report it to me so that I can understand complaints thoroughly and can take appropriate action.

Review and Monitoring

This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains effective and in line with current legislation.

Additional Considerations

  • Accessibility: I aim to ensure that my facilities and services are accessible to people with disabilities. My teaching studio is on the ground floor and has step-free access. I also offer tuition at my Students’ homes if it would be more convenient for the Student.
  • Cultural sensitivity: I am mindful of cultural differences and actively use a range of resources and repertoire to ensure my music tuition is culturally inclusive. Students always have choice in the music they choose to learn.

Use of Photos and Videos Policy

In the course of teaching, photos and videos of both the teacher and the student can be helpful in the learning process.

I am committed to the protection of your privacy, and under the Data Protection Act 1998, I require your consent to use images of yourself or your child.

Shared responsibilities

I, the Teacher, will only take photos and videos of the Student with their consent (and with the consent of the Student’s Parent or Carer if under 18).

Likewise, the Student (or their Parent/Carer) will only take videos of the Teacher with their consent.

Any images of the Student will be stored on file in accordance with GDPR (see GDPR Compliance Statement) and not shared with any third party unless written permission is given by the Student (and the Student’s Parent/Carer if under 18).

Likewise, any images of the Teacher stored by the Student or their Parent/Carer should not be shared with any third party, including on social media, unless written permission is given.

The Teacher, Student, and the Student’s Parent/Carer all reserve the right to view any images taken and to delete any images that they deem inappropriate.

You may withdraw your consent at any time by informing me in writing (email will suffice).
